As her latest creation unfolds, we take a closer look at her public installation titled “Cuartito – La Orilla de La Orilla” and her upcoming residency experience with Atelier Mondial, spanning across France and Switzerland.

A Glimpse into Andrea Perales’ Artistic Journey

Andrea Perales Covarrubias is a visual artist from Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico, currently residing and working in Oaxaca de Juárez. Her artistic practice encompasses sculpture, installation, and textiles, focusing on themes of identity, territory, and corporeality. Growing up in a border city, Covarrubias was constantly navigating between languages, cultures, and identities, which taught her the value of listening and adapting her message depending on the context.

Introducing "Cuartito – La Orilla de La Orilla"

In March 2025, Covarrubias unveiled her public installation titled "Cuartito – La Orilla de La Orilla" in Matamoros. This project explores the concept of borders and collective memory, reflecting her commitment to bridging contemporary art with traditional craftsmanship. The installation invites viewers to reflect on their relationship with materials, space, and each other, creating a sense of connection that feels both intimate and universal. 

Segundo Piso

In addition to her art practice, Covarrubias founded a clothing brand called Segundo Piso, which began with a simple coverall design and has evolved into a line of workwear that bridges functionality and creative expression. The pieces are inspired by the tools and processes of making, celebrating the labor that goes into both art and craft. She also runs her art studio, e.stud.io, in Oaxaca, which is focused on production but has recently opened its doors for exhibitions. It's a space where she experiments with ideas and invites others into the process, fostering both creative production and collaboration.

Residency Experience with Atelier Mondial

Perales’ upcoming 6-months residency at Atelier Mondial in France and Switzerland offers her a unique opportunity to explore new ideas. Atelier Mondial is renowned for nurturing creativity among artists from various backgrounds, providing essential space and resources for innovation.
